We’ve put our wishlist online!
As we continue to protect, preserve, and steward land, SAHC’s operations needs also grow and change. You can make a concrete contribution to our mission by donating items that drive our program. And, because it’s difficult sometimes to know exactly what we need, we’ve created this online wishlist with links to products & items identified, to make the process easier.
- Gently Used Gear for the 2012 Annual Membership Event
Do you have gently used camping gear, a bike, kayak, or other outdoor adventure item collecting dust around your home? Rather than sell it on Craigslist or consignment, donate your unused items to SAHC for the Annual Membership Event raffle, and take a tax deduction instead. Contact Cheryl at 828.253.0095 ext 209 or cheryl@appalachian.org for more information!
- Items for our Seasonal Ecologist Cabin
In March 2012, the cabin that houses SAHC’s Roan Seasonal Ecologist was vandalized. We’ve fixed the major issues related to the break-in, but there are few odds and ends that need fixing before it is suitable for living. We need a few items to replace what was stolen/compromised during the break-in, and we need some volunteers to help clean up the mess that was left by the perpetrator. Here’s a list of the needed items: a high, buffet style table- something wide that can set against a wall and is tall enough to cook on, a toaster oven, and a small refrigerator- preferably with some freezer space (like this one http://www.walmart.com/ip/Igloo-4.6-cu.-ft.-Refrigerator-and-Freezer-FR464/15162430?findingMethod=Recommendation:wm:RecentlyViewedItems).
There’s potential to have two work days- one on Saturday, May 5th, and one on Tuesday, May 8th. Duties may include sweeping, mopping, heavy lifting, re-organizing, and general spic-and-spanning. For more information on volunteering with this project, contact chris@appalachian.org.
- Stewardship Vehicle
Our program work preserves beautiful tracts of land for outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, local food production, and clean water sources – forever. However, in order to maintain the integrity of our preserved landscape, we must personally monitor each property, every year. Our intrepid stewardship crew frequently forays into remote mountain coves and rural farms for these monitoring & exploration visits. We also host volunteer work days to improve water quality and remove trash and other invasive elements in the landscape. The vehicle we currently use to access these properties is 26 years old, and maintenance on it has become increasingly costly. We have been looking for a replacement for this aging vehicle, so that our conservation management team has safe, efficient transportation when fulfilling their responsibilities. Also, we are extremely grateful to our members and donors for supporting the work we do, and we want to thoughtfully invest their donated funds in serving our conservation priorities. Eliminating the costly repairs for our aging stewardship vehicle would be a boon to our membership – and would allow us to use that money more effectively in land preservation & management.
We are looking for a 4-wheel drive vehicle, with good clearance and seating capacity for a team of 4-6, preferably something like a Nissan Pathfinder or Toyota 4Runner.
- A fireproof and waterproof safe to store our legal documents (1.3 cubic feet or larger). Our commitment to preserve land forever means that we must adhere to national standards of professionalism and quality control, including the ability to safely store legal documents pertaining to SAHC’s land transactions.
